VOLLEYBALL ACTIVITIES

Here is an example of an adapted version of the game ,Speedball, that may be played indoors/outdoors.You may change the rules depending on class size and
abilty :

The following is how I approached the speedball unit and be

informed that I adapted the skills and game according to

each individual class. The game itself is a combination of soccer,

football, volleyball and all related skills of throwing, catching, kicking

and offense/defense procedures.

Saying that,it must be realized that there must be a sequential followup

so they have a base to start with . That is, the activity was introduced

after the soccer and football skills that then led into the beginning of the

basketball /volleyball unit.

Later , in my years I changed to striking skills , hand/eye coordination,

throwing/catching,etc.

So, here is how I started :

SOCCER

Soccer toe taps

Dribbling( obstacles or students)

Trapping

Juggling

Heading

Goalie play

Kicking/Passing

Small sided games

FOOTBALL

Throwing/catching(accuracy,distance)

Pass patterns

Defense-rip flag tag

Kicking

Place kicking

Small sided games

BASKETBALL

Dribbling

Passing

Shooting technique

Offense/defense schemes

Small sided games

VOLLEYBALL

Serving

Passing

Digging

Bumping

Small sided games

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

These are just some examples but here are the extra skills needed

to finalize the speedball skills. It must be understood that if the ball

is on the ground, then soccer will take place. At no time may the ball be

touched with the hands first, unless the goalie throws the ball to a

teammate. Or if you plan to have a sideline, that person must execute a

"correct" soccer throw in, the goalie may either roll or throw or serve the

ball.

This leads up to the speedball skills:

Double leg jam - the ball is placed between both feet and flipped

up to the hands( it went off feet first , so the ball may be caught)

Single leg flip up - any ball that rolls on the floor, step under the ball

and it glides up either leg and then caught.

Juggling - the ball may be juggled off any body part, then caught

( this is used better if off one bounce or two)except no hands/arms first

Air dribble -after catching a thrown ball = from  a teammate, that person

may air dribble (3-5 steps){Usually,I counted}

Dribbling- that person may dribble = 3 -5 times only

Here are some of the rules that may be adapted according to skill level:

  • Start the game with a jump ball as in b-ball
  • If caught may run with the ball or pass( right?)middle school
  • Ball on ground play soccer rules( no hands penalties)
  • Scoring
  1. Point for a soccer kick into the goal/net
  2. Points for a throw into the goal/net
  3. Points for  a header into the goal/net

0 points for a throw between the cones and net

1/2 point for kicking the ball between the goal/net and cones( I'll explain

later)

    6. Points for a throw beyond the goal line to another teammate,(BUT),it

must be accoplished with 3 successful throws first.[ I like to involve more

people amd teamwork]

With the 1/2 point and appropraite points for kick, throw, there is an integrative

math process.

  • After a score the goalie throws, rolls the ball to teammates
  • Switching position after 3 minutes
  • Goalies to players, sideline to goalies , players to sideline
  • Or goalies to players and vice versa if doing small sided games
  • Two games at once

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here is the arrangement for play:

            ^(cone)        ----- (net)        ^(cone)

The extra goalies are lined up between the cone and net.Only one goalie per net.

The goals should be placed on the back endlines with extra space behind the

endlines for players to catch the ball. The goalies may not leave the line to block

    the "touchdown" pass.

Note : ******make  a contact line like team handball that the throws can't

be too close(make an arc for safety or tape , etc.)

Any ball that is caught from the sideline/goalie or juggled to self, that person

may either run with the ball or pass to a teammate. If tagged(or ripped off),the

ball is placed on the ground. The taggee may soccer kick or double jam. The

tagged person must take 3 steps back at the moment of the tag. There should

be no body contact other than the tag or rip off.

Any ball that is dropped(bad toss/catch), the ball goes to the other team or

play soccer rules(depends on skill level).

The goalie may "serve" the ball to a teammate or any ball in the air may be

"volleyed" to a teammate.

MISCELLANEOUS:

For more variety and skills , any ball that is juggled/double jammed/ expertly or a single

leg flip up , that person may throw/shoot at the b-ball hoop.If it hits the backboard

its one point. If it goes in , then two. But, the downside is if the defense/opposite

team catches the ball before it hits the floor, the score is negated and play continues

as if it were a catch.

Of course, if you are playing outside , then the rules will be adapted accordingly.

It will take lots of speedball practice. The game will resemble soccer until the

skills and teamwork are mastered.

If you have any questions ,please buzz me.

Here is some info taken from my webpage( soccer/football link from left pane)

SOCCER/SPEEDBALL :

Arrange the class into three separate lines for each team. The goalie will be at the endline in a goal. The rest of the goalies will be placed between two traffic cones that are placed 8-10 feet from the goal net. The sideline players are standing at each sideline. The players will roam the floor but start at their own side of the midcourt line. First , you must practice some speedball skills:

FLIP UP/double jam - place ball between feet , jump , and catch the ball

FOOT SLIDE - place the foot under a rolling ball and it slides up the leg and catch the ball

JUGGLE UP - from a bounce , juggle the ball off any body part(except "hands") and catch the ball

RULES :

1. Any ball on the floor can't be picked up - play soccer rules

2. Running with the ball is permitted until tagged - at that point the tagger kicks the ball - tagee must move away 3 paces

3. The sideline players pass the ball to their players(soccer kick)

4. The goalies may throw the ball to their players

5. Players may throw , catch , kick and score

SCORING :

1 point for a kick between the cones

2 points for a run ( only after 3 consecutive throws) outsdie the cones and past the endline

3 points for a soccer kick into the net

The game starts with a jump ball as in b-ball and play continues using soccer , volleyball(slapping , hitting) , basketball and speedball skills . The goalie may be removed when there is a score . That person will move between the cones. After a score , the goalies throw the ball to a player. When there is a new line change , the game starts again with a jump ball . The players exchange with the sidelines , the sidelines go to goalies and the goalies go to the players.

NOTE : Remember a ball may be lifted anytime off the floor using speedball skills .
